Scholarship Requirements
Must be a graduating high school senior, must be an economically disadvantaged student, qualify live in Cook County in Illinois, G.P.A: 3.0, and essay submissions.
In 2011, The Edward & Shirley Calahan Foundation Scholarship was created. Awarding three one-time scholarships of $2,000 each. We knew that was just the beginning. By 2014, we had expanded our financial support, assisting five students with $5,000 scholarships distributed over four years. Today, in our 16th year, we have grown significantly. The Calahan Foundation now supports 32 students, each receiving a $5,000 commitment over four years, and our growth shows no signs of slowing.
While financial aid is a crucial part of our mission, it is only the start of our work. We provide monthly virtual meetings for our scholars, where they can connect with a network of virtual mentors throughout their college journeys. These mentors are dedicated to encouraging, challenging, and guiding the scholars, equipping them with the skills and mindset for success in college and beyond.
On January 29, 2013, Hadiya Pendleton, a promising young teen, was tragically killed while playing in King Park, shortly after performing at President Barack Obama’s Inauguration Parade. In response to her loss, the Calahan family honored her memory by establishing a scholarship in her name, awarded to a young person committed to advocating against gun violence.
In 2021, the Calahan Foundation took another step in this fight by partnering with a local high school. Together, we aim to provide students with the resources and motivation to become agents of change in their schools and communities, helping to combat gun violence.
As we mark 16 years, we remain dedicated to our mission, thanks to our faithful sponsors and donors. Our journey is far from over. As Ronald J. Sider said, “No one can do everything, but everyone can do something, and together we can change the world.”
